First, you need the correct hat. This is typically going to be a tricorne, or three-cornered, black hat. The traditional hats of pirates in the movies, it is the first piece for authentic pirate costumes of all types. On that hat itself should be an image of a skull and crossbones, or “The Jolly Roger” as it’s known. Wikipedia gives the history of The Jolly Roger here:

The name “Jolly Roger” goes back at least to Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates, published in 1724.

Kids love the fun of choosing who or what they’re going to dress up as for Halloween. I suspect that the planning and choosing is almost as much fun as the actual Halloween event itself.

Scary kids costumes are always way up there in list of favorites, and if not scary then characters that are less than pillars of society are a pretty safe bet in the popularity stakes.

Pirate costumes for kids are right up there at the top. I don’t know many little boys who haven’t wanted to dress up as a pirate at some stage for some costume event. My little five year old recently went as a pirate to a book parade at school where they had to dress as a character from a book – I don’t think he’d ever heard of Treasure Island – he just wanted to be a pirate and we had to find a book to fit the costume.

He now knows some of the story from this classic tale so that can’t be a bad thing can it?

Living in England, Halloween is not one of our big holidays. However my friend in Texas, apart from telling me what all her friends want to dress as, continually tells me from August how much she’s looking forward to Halloween.

A couple of years ago, she dressed as a female pirate and to be honest the costume wasn’t very good – she looked more like a gypsy than a pirate. This year, her son decided they were both going to be pirates for Halloween, and she assures me that this year the pirate costumes she’s chosen are much better and more realistic.

She’s already told me her son had his costume picked out in August, but she is struggling to pick just one outfit from a possible dozen. Once she’s decided then I’ll get a picture…can’t wait to see what she’s chosen.

Does anyone really know why pirates and people dressed like pirates wear eye patches??? One theory that makes a lot of sense is that pirates (or sailors) liked to keep one eye adjusted to the darkness below deck as the didn’t have much in the way lighting. It is thought that if a sailor was in a hurry or fight that he could easily remove the patch when the fight went below and have an advantage over his opponent in a close combat fight. It seems that they might have even changed eyes that the patch was on as they went from deck to deck and this was considered a time saver instead of waiting for eyes to adjust to the darkness. Is this theory real??? Nobody really knows for sure. There is not much information in any historical records to confirm or deny why pirates used the eye patch.

It doesn’t make a lot of difference, everyone knows you have to have a patch to look like a real pirate for hallloween!
