Seriously…who wouldn’t love to see a Hollywood movie entitled, Batman versus Superman?!? Just imagine…the Dark Dark night and the Man of Steel matching wits. Here’s what I have thought of as a script that I would like and then, let me tell you what Hollywood was considering back as early as 2001! Here is what I have come up regarding a script…
Superman rampages throughout earth after contracting space spores discovered by a Lex Luthor space mission. The spores come from a red-colored sun system and infect Superman’s brain causing a kind of dementia. His dementia causes him to think that Lex and he are partners in crime plus he’s convinced that they are designed to rule this back-water planet. Luthor is disgustingly devious …he shows videos of the numerous occasions earth’s war machines have attempted to eliminate Superman. Cut to Wayne Manor…Many years ago, Bruce Wayne moth-balled his real Batman costume to recuperate from his final fight with Bane. He’s in retirement when he sees news reports that Superman has went rogue. Batman doubts himself and struggles still with the painful torment of what the Batman alter-ego caused on a personal level, both physically and emotionally… he might not have it in him to defeat Superman and Luthor together. However, after wrestling with self-doubt and putting those doubts behind him, he makes use of all his assets to devise a scheme which will once-and-for-all annihilate Luthor and turn Superman. Batman isn’t without his own endless assets to locate a cure for LL’s devious plot. Batman sets his brilliant detective mind on overcoming these “enemies” individually. He decides to initiate an agenda where he’ll make use of the “divide and conquer” gambit… Luthor’s one weakness is his mistrust of everyone! Through many 3rd party participants (including other superheroes! 
Bruce Wayne sets Lex and Clark against each other. As Batman suspected, Lex hides a plan to cure Superman at the last second before he destroys him. After all, Lex’s ego wouldn’t kill the Man of Steel if Superman would never fully understand the enmity between them. It had been reported in 2002 JJ Abrams was hired to start a film script for Superman’s death. However, he tanked that idea and created what was known as the script “Superman: Flyby” (seriously? )The project took off however, the studio dropped out in the last second in support of ….hold onto your chair, the Charlies Angels movie! There is another rewrite by Akiva Goldsman where Bruce would make an effort to disgard all of the pains of the past from the deaths of people that he cared about and the divorce from Lois Lane. Clark is dubbed Bruce’s bestman and marries Liz Burns. After the Joker kills Liz, Bruce takes the real batman costume from a the dusty closet in the Batcave as the Joker and Lex Luthor pull their resources. Kent retreats to Smallville to take up where he had left off with Lana Lang.
Regrettably, the studio cancelled any more action on this script to pursue separate films for Batman and Superman. One ironic tongue-in-cheek homage paid in the film, “I Am Legend”… there’s a hanging banner swinging in Time Square showing the Superman S inside the bat signal icon. The reason…Akiva Goldsman authored the screen plays for “I am Legend” and “Batman versus Superman”!
